What's in the box

When you receive your Citrus Filtered Showerhead, your package includes:

  • 1x Citrus Filtered Showerhead, with an outer casing made of stainless steel and an inner filter chamber made of recyclable plastics
  • 1x filter, pre-installed in the Showerhead, containing a proprietary blend of ingredients: KDF-55 (targets heavy metals and chlorine), Granular Activated Carbon (targets organic compounds and chloramine), and Vitamin C (targets chlorine and lowers pH)
  • 1x wrench, which can be used to remove your old showerhead and install your new one
  • 1x bundle of eco-friendly hemp fiber, which is a planet-friendly alternative to thread seal tape (also known as PTFE or plumber’s tape) that can be used to seal the potentially leaky joint between your pipe and your new showerhead

How to install your new showerhead

Follow these three easy steps for installation in under 5 minutes.

Step 1: Remove your old showerhead

To remove your old showerhead, you'll need to find the connection nut. This is the part that attaches your current showerhead to the pipe in your wall, and it usually looks like a large metal nut or ring. Use the included wrench to firmly grip the nut and gently turn it counterclockwise (to the left). You might need to apply some force, but if the connection nut feels stuck, try spraying some penetrating oil on it and letting it sit for a few minutes before trying again.

If it's stuck (can happen in places with hard water)

  • Soak a towel in vinegar solution
  • Wrap towel around the joint, secure in place with string or a rubber band
  • Let soak for 10-15 minutes
  • Try again to remove with the help of the included wrench

[Optional] Step 2: Apply thread seal to prevent leaks

You'll find a small amount of hemp fiber included with your showerhead. This natural material creates a tight seal around the pipe. Carefully wrap the hemp fiber (start at the bottom and wrap clockwise) around the threaded part of the pipe sticking out from the wall. Make sure the wraps are neat and even, and cover the entire threaded section. This will help ensure a secure and leak-free connection when you attach the new showerhead.

Why this is optional

This step might not be necessary depending on the age, size, and condition of your pipe. You are welcome to skip this step at first to see if this joint leaks before applying the hemp fiber.

Step 3: Twist on your new showerhead

Now it's time to install your new showerhead! Carefully align the showerhead with the threaded pipe and screw it on by hand, twisting clockwise (to the right). Once it's hand-tight, use the included wrench or the built-in wing nut to gently tighten the connection. Be careful not to over-tighten (whatever you can do with one hand should be sufficient), as this can damage the showerhead or the pipe.

A closer look atour filter

The table below provides a more detailed overview of common tap water contaminants, their potential health risks, and how our filter effectively reduces or removes them.

Common contaminants
Potential risks
Filter effectiveness
Chlorine, Chloramine, & Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs): Chlorine and Chloramine (Chlorine + Ammonia) are disinfectants added to municipal water supplies to kill bacteria. When these disinfectants react with naturally occuring substances in the water, they form byproducts like Trihalomethanes (THMs) and Trihaloacetic Acids (THAAs).
Disinfectants and their byproducts can lead to dryness, irritation, or allergic reactions on hair and skin. Inhaling them during a hot shower may further irritate the airways, particularly in individuals with respiratory conditions. Over the long term, certain DBPs have been linked to liver, kidney, and reproductive effects. Granular Activated Carbon removes chlorine and DBPs from the water by adsorbing them (sticking to their surface). Vitamin C balances water pH and, along with KDF-55, neutralizes remaining chlorine and chloramine, converting both into gentler, safer substances.
Heavy Metals: Metals such as lead, mercury, or arsenic which find their way into water supplies due to corroded infrastructure, industrial runoff, or naturally occurring deposits."
Heavy metals can cause dryness, breakage, or dullness of hair and may irritate sensitive skin. Long-term exposure may lead to toxicity, neurological complications, and other systemic health concerns. KDF-55 attracts and binds to heavy metals via redox reactions. Granular Activated Carbon adsorbs metal particles while Vitamin C supports overall water quality.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Carbon-based chemical pollutants, typically from industrial solvents or agricultural runoff, that evaporate easily when exposed to air.
VOCs can cause dryness, irritation, or allergic reactions on hair and skin. Inhaling these compounds during hot showers may irritate the respiratory system. Over time, prolonged exposure has been linked to potential effects on the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Granular Activated Carbon is highly effective at adsorbing many VOCs and other organic contaminants, and its efficacy is increased by presence of KDF-55 and Vitamin C.
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S): Often introduced into the water from decaying organic matter or bacteria in pipes, H2S causes a “rotten egg” smell.
Hydrogen sulfide is generally more of a nuisance than a threat. It introduces a “rotten egg” odor that can linger on hair and skin, contributing to dryness and unpleasant smell. At higher concentrations, chronic exposure can lead to headaches and fatigue. KDF-55 oxidizes hydrogen sulfide to sulfate, reducing odor while Granular Activated Carbon adsorbs remaining sulfur compounds. Vitamin C supports the overall effectiveness of the filtration system.
Microplastics: Microscopic Plastic Particles are tiny plastic fragments or fibers that enter water through the breakdown of larger plastic waste or from synthetic clothing fibers during washing."
While the health impacts of microplastics are still under study, they may contribute to skin irritation and dryness by acting as physical irritants. Microplastics are also a significant environmental concern, polluting ecosystems and potentially introducing harmful substances into the body. Granular Activated Carbon traps smaller microplastic particles through adsorption, while the filtration system’s fine mesh design physically blocks larger particles.
PFAS: Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, sometimes referred to as "forever chemicals," are human-made chemical compounds introduced into water from industrial processes, firefighting foams, and household products like nonstick cookware.
PFAS can build up in the body over time, potentially affecting hormones and the immune system. Even small amounts may pose long-term health risks. These chemicals will persist for thousands of years unless filtered out and broken down through a process using extreme heat. Granular Activated Carbon effectively reduces the concentration of PFAS through adsorption.

How to change the filter

We make it as simple as possible to replace and send your used filter back to us for proper disposal. To maintain optimal water quality, we recommend that you replace the filter every ~6 months or after ~7,000 gallons of water use.

Zero waste, by design

We believe that we are responsible for the entire lifecycle of the stuff we make. That's why everything you purchase from Citrus Wellness Co. is built to last and has a plan already in place for how to properly dispose of it at the end of its "useful life". Please explore the expandable sections below to learn more:

Packaging +

All of our packaging is 100% recyclable – we opt for unbleached, uncoated cardboard boxes to ship our products. Please take care to recycle these rather than putting them in the trash.

Installation tools +

There are two items included in the box with your Citrus Filtered Showerhead: A wrench and a spool of hemp fiber. The wrench should be useful in other scenarios, but if you choose not to keep it, we ask that you consider donating it to your local thrift store (please don’t throw it in the trash!). The hemp fiber is a planet-friendly alternative to thread seal tape (also known as PTFE or plumber’s tape), and it is 100% compostable, so please take care to dispose of it responsibly.
